A revolution is gaining momentum in Dublin, this time its not the GPO but the docklands. For years I have been watching Steorn develop as a company, I was in college when I first heard the claims. I had studied A level physics prior to ever going University and I had always an interest in science, physics, space and technology. The claim was that they had discovered a magnetic anomaly which resulted in them being able to extract more energy from a device than what was being put in to make it run. Essentially a device that generated free, clean and constant energy from the point of use.

The internet offers Government the chance not just to do things faster or cheaper. It offers Government the chance to do things differently. To do things better. To offer choice
But for that to happen Governments need to think of citizens – and themselves- in a totally different way. They need to think of citizens as consumers of Government services. Not passive recipients of whatever the Government deigns to give them, be it social welfare checks or motor tax discs. But rather as informed, aware and savvy customers who recognise a good idea when they see it and run with it.
Let me explain what I mean. I recently read a book called Nudge by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein. It speaks of how small pushes in the direction of one choice or another can have a big effect.
At the moment, politicians are getting used to the idea of campaigning on the net. My own website, www.paschaldonohoe.ie, is a case in point. I use it as a way to communicate my message, building a “client base” (voters) and, hopefully, garnering “custom” (votes).
